About the Event
Aontroim translates as “lone ridge/house”. A monastery was founded at Antrim in AD 495 with a small settlement growing up around it.
Antrim folk hold the nickname of “The Glensman” due to the famous and fabulous glens in the county.
Antrim could almost be nicknamed the “Presidential County” as a number of US Presidents can claim roots there.
Antrim’s landscape was formed 50 to 60 million years ago by volcanic and geologic activity. The Giant’s Causeway is 40,000 basalt columns cascading into the sea.
Slemish is said to have been home to St. Patrick for at least 7 years during his time in captivity in Ireland.
Antrim was once part of the Gaelic kingdom named Dál Riada ruled by the O'Lynch clan in the late 6th and early 7th century. The kingdom stretched across the Irish Sea as far as western Scotland.
